For many decades, the club Arsenal FC was directly linked with Arsenal Stadium, or Highbury, as it was called by the fans. Highbury was one of the true cathedrals of football. Every true football fan in the world knew it and everyone wanted to attend a match there one day. The ground was a real beauty, with the famous North Bank and the Clock End.The problem was, that many matches had taken their toll, the facilities were run down and the capacity of 38.000 was simply too small for a successful club like Arsenal. There was no space for an expansion of the ground, so Arsenal decided to build a new state-of-the-art football arena jsut around the corner: Emirates Stadium.
The new ground has two tiers, with a great view of the pitch from every seat and capacity has increased to 60.000. But like all new grounds, Emriates appears sterile with no charm. Although the architects tried to rescue some of Highbury's tradition (the original clock from the Clock End is now part of the stadium facade), it just doesn't feel like Arsenals home yet. Emirates draws crowds however. At the moment, it's almost impossible to get tickets to a Premier League match, unless you're an Arsenal member. |
