If it wasn't for the commitment of the Charlton supporters, there would be no football at Floyd Road today. The club had already left the Valley and it was just a matter of time until the decayed stadium would have to make room for residential buildings, due to the attractive location close to Greenwich. Yet, the fans had different plans and fought for a reutrn to the Valley, after the club shared grounds with Palace and West Ham. Long story short: they were successful and today, the Valley is one of the (if not the) most beautiful football grounds in London.
What makes this ground so special? Basically, it's the fact that all four stands are different, yet fit together perfectly. You have the East Stand on one sideline of the pitch, which is a single-tierd stand and displays the ground name on the seats. On the other sideline, there's the West Stand, which has two tiers. The North Stand behind the goal links these two stands by closing the corners completely. This guarantees a great atmosphere. In the South, the away supporters are located in the Jimmy Seed Stand. The corners are not closed there, instead you will find a scoreboard screen. Behind the Jimmy Seed stand, there's a large residential highrise building, which adds to the unique atmosphere of the Valley.
Charlton Athletic is nowhere near going back up to the Premier League at the moment, so if you want to see first class football, you might want to visit another grounds. But if you're mroe into grounds than into tactics on the pitch, the Valley is definately worth a visit. |
